Electricity

Many areas depend on precise measurement of electrical quantities to guarantee the same “Volt” and “Ampere” (voltage and current) in all countries. This provides a basis for other (i.e. mechanical) measurands which are firstly converted by transducers to electrical quantities, then measured or indicated.

Units of the following electrical quantities are realised at BEV:

• Electrical energy and power
• Direct voltage
• Direct current
• High tension and high current
• Capacitance
• Alternating voltage and current
• Resistance

The word electricity comes from the Greek word electron (amber). The phenomenon of static electricity was already known to Thales of Miletus(B.C. 600) who observed that amber, when rubbed, attracted light substances.
