Taximeters

Taximeters are measuring instruments in vehicles for the transportation of persons against payment, which calculates and displays the fare to be paid for a trip. The calculation of the fare is based on the measured distance and/or duration of the trip on the base of a stored tariff.

Verification of taximeters

Taximeters are subject to mandatory verification in Austria. The first verification of a new instrument is called initial verification. The verification of an unverified instrument is a new verification. Verification during the validity period is a reverification.
Since 30 October 2006 the Measuring instruments directive (MID) is applied in the member states of the EU. This directive regulates the first placing on the market of measuring instruments subject to mandatory verification by so called conformity assessment procedures. Taximeters are covered by the MID, thus they can be placed on the market for the first time without further national approval and initial verification. The assessment of conformity is equal to the initial verification.

For taximeters the modules B+D, B+F or H1 are applicable as conformity assessment procedure.

The conformity assessment concerns only the taximeter itself and not the adaptation to the vehicle. Hence there is an additional national verification after the adaptation to the vehicle. This is subject to – as well as new verification and subsequent verification – national regulations and is carried out by the legal metrology authority.

The interval for subsequent verification is 2 years for taximeters.
