APOS in Action at Alpine Ski World Cup races 14.06.2024 - The positioning service APOS of the Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying - BEV supports digital course setting at Alpine Ski World Cup races.

Digitalization in the alpine ski circuit is being strongly promoted by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation FIS, which opens up a wide range of opportunities for improvement. For example, course setting can be optimized using highly accurate position data. This new method was investigated in the pilot project "Alpine Ski World and European Cup - Digital Gates Measurement with support of GNSS Service" in the 2023/2024 World Cup season by the Slovakian Sport Innovation Center in collaboration with the Technical University of Bratislava.

The APOS (Austrian Positioning Service) by the Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying was used for the ski races in Austria, allowing the position of the individual gate-poles to be measured to the centimeter. This data was used to precisely analyze the course guidance of the individual World Cup venues, which can be used to improve the preparation and follow-up of the athletes. The project team praised the APOS positioning service for its highly reliable, accurate and secure positioning in all weather conditions, from the first Austrian race in Sölden to the last in Saalbach.
