Geodesy meets IT at TGM 12.02.2025 - The Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying - BEV took the opportunity to present itself as an innovative employer and educational partner as part of the “Spirit of HIT Days 2025” at the Technologisches Gewerbemuseum (TGM) in Vienna. The event, which was organized by the Higher Department of Information Technology, offered around 550 students exciting insights into the connection between geodesy and IT.
At the center of the BEV presence were two workshops on the topic “Where am I? High-precision positioning via GNSS signals”.
Franz Blauensteiner, Head of the Reference Systems Department, explained how satellite navigation works with a smartphone and the challenges that arise when the location needs to be known not just to a few meters, but to a few centimeters. Such high levels of accuracy are necessary, for example, when surveying land, preparing ski slopes or cultivating farmland in an environmentally friendly way.
Stefan Lacher and Johannes Lemmerer from the IT Service Management and IT Infrastructure Department also gave an insight into the complex network and system architecture behind BEV's positioning service APOS (Austrian Positioning Service). This service makes it possible to provide customers with precise location data in real time.
The pupils in the classes 3 to 5 were particularly enthusiastic about the practical applications and asked numerous questions.
In addition to the technical content, the focus was also on promoting young talent. BEV took the opportunity to inspire young talents for the diverse career opportunities in the field of geodesy and IT and to draw attention to itself.
The “Spirit of HIT Days 2025” once again underlined the importance of cooperation between educational institutions and innovative companies such as BEV in order to give pupils practical insights into future-oriented technologies and show them prospects for their professional future.
